Assessment of reproducibility and biological variability of fasting and postprandial plasma metabolite concentrations using 1H NMR spectroscopy

This study aimed to estimate the level of technical and biological variability in metabolite concentrations in fasting and postprandial states over two different time intervals.

Plasma samples from the Netherlands Epidemiology of Obesity (NEO) study were measured using NMR spectroscopy. Both fasting and postprandial metabolite concentrations showed high technical reproducibility indicating that limited variation is introduced by laboratory procedures or the technology. Biological reproducibility of postprandial metabolite concentrations showed a less or equal variability than fasting metabolite concentrations over time.
