Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid levels and dysregulations in biological stress systems

In this paper, researchers examined the association between omega-3 (n-3) Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFAs) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) plasma levels and markers of biological stress system: the immune-inflammatory system, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal-axis (HPA-axis) and the autonomic nervous system (ANS).

The study showed that having various (cumulative) indicators of dysregulation of three biological stress systems was significantly associated with lower n-3 PUFA and DHA plasma levels. Further conclusions suggested omega-3 (n-3) PUFA supplementation to reduce biological stress, thereby improving somatic and mental health.
